The hilly region in the south-western corner of Flanders is still fairly rich in small landscape elements and woodlands. It is famous for its old hedgerows and species-rich woodland edges. The presence of a large variety of soil types and groundwater systems in a small area leads to a large variety in vegetation types. The study area covers the municipalities Poperinge, Ieper, Heuvelland, Mesen and Zonnebeke. The ecosystem vision explores the biodiversity potentials, unravels present landscape ecological processes and translates this knowledge into a global vision on nature in the area.
