Abstract

Agricultural use of sludge is under strong political pressure. Sludge contains toxicants and is considered as waste. On the other hand, sludge contains nutrients and takes part in the nutrient cycle. Use of slugde in agriculture is preferable to dumping of incinerating for good quality sludge. There is lack of information about effects of good quality sludge on soil fertility and soil quality. For this study, field trials amended with sludge are constructed. Different amounts and types of sludge (high and low metal loading) are applied to the plots during 4 growing seasons. Yearly effects on plant growth, nutrient and metal uptake by plants and contents of metal and organic matter in the soil will be measured.
