The PIRENE project aims at providing the authorities of the Wallone Region with a decision making tool for the management of water resources. Surface water, groundwater, rain and flowing water, as well as the interfaces of those systems with connected ecosystems (such as wetlands), are taken into account. Models are being developped to describe the qualitative as well a quantitative dynamics of water resspources. Special reference is made to the frame directive of the European Union concerning water resources mnagement, and more especially, regarding economic aspects, to the polluter - pays principle, to cost recovery of services connected with water use, and to water management by hydrographic basins.
