Abstract

Grassland riparian buffer zones have an important function with respect nitrate retention in agricultural areas. The efficiency of such buffer zones depends strongly on their denitrifying capacity. The relative importance of denitrification will be investigated for 3 evolutions of grassland buffers zones via (1) an in situ nitrate balance, (2) mesocosm studies and (3) via the 18O and 15N signature of nitrate in the groundwater of the buffer zones.
