Abstract

The project will contribute to the introduction of sustainability assessment guidance in Flanders by providing a scientific background and concrete suggestions. The quality of sustainability assessments will be improved, based on the evaluation of existing approaches.
The objectives of the project are: to obtain an overview of the international state of the art in sustainability assessment; to develop and apply quality criteria for sustainability assessment; to evaluate existing sustainability assessment approaches; to establish guidance for sustainability assessment in Flanders; to apply the guidance on a selection of policy-relevant case-studies in Flanders. These objectives will lead to policy recommendations in order to optimize the application of sustainability assessment as a process fostering sustainable development in Flanders.

The scientific objectives of the project include research on the implementation of sustainable development policy, the publication of the results in international peer reviewed journals, the presentation of the research in national and international meetings and the completion of a PhD on the subject.
