Abstract

Woodlands in and close to urban areas provide a wide range of social, cultural, economic and environmental benefits to society. As large parts of Europe have become highly urbanised, these woodlands' importance continues to grow. Their full potential, however, is often not met for various reasons, including the lack of sufficient woodland resources to meet society's recreational and other demands, and the wide range of urban pressures. This problem has a strong European dimension, as the main issues in urban forestry are rather similar across the continent. The aim of the proposed urban forestry project is to develop sustainable approach to urban woodland conservation, management and development. In close collaboration with local stakeholders, a toolbox to support urban woodland planning, design and management will be developed and tested in 6 cities in different parts of Europe.
