The objective of this project is to develop decision support tools to optimise the sustainable use of biomass from different sources (forest, nature, agriculture and industry). Biomass from nature, so-called Low-Input, High-Diversity (LIHiD) systems have rarely been explored as a source of biomass for energy. The usage for non-energetic purposes like biopolymers, construction material, … looks promising, but is still limited. With time the biomass competition for materials or bio-energy will increase, while for a few others processing will remain problematic. In a first phase knowledge gaps will be inventoried regarding quality of biomass, supply and demand. Possible scenarios will be compared using trend modelling and evaluated regarding sustainability (using LCA techniques) and socio-economic relevance. This project will ultimately result in the development of a decision support system or DSS.
