Abstract

Social insects socialize, by definition, and aggregate at least during some periods of their life cycle. Killed (crashed) individuals of such species loose body fluids and cell contents that otherwise are never released. Some of these released molecules have evolved into alarm signals ("alarm pheromones"). The "repellent hypothesis" appears to be applicable to a variety of insect taxa.
