This project focuses on the discovery of homologous characters and character states. More in particular we would like to con- tribute, at the higher taxonomic level, to a greater knowledge of the morphological nature of our study groups. (1) From already well-known micromorphological characters, such as floral necta- ries and carpel shape, we will test homology hypotheses. Furthermore, we would like to check out whether the defined types could be used for the characterization of important evolutionary patterns. (2) New micromorphological characters (such as vestured pits in vessels, apertures ans wall stratification of pollen, and orbicules) will be screened in the angiosperms as a whole. These observations will be used to work out improved typologies, and to assess the value of the types as synapomorphies of subgroups.
