Abstract

The aquatic resources of Southern Africa have until now been mainly used for crop irrigation. Modern practices of integrated water management and aquaculture provide an opportunity for these resources also to be utilised as a sustainable source of protein and to improve the socio-economic living standards of the local rural people. The project will address the management of the biological resources through the genetic management of tilapia and catfish, and the ecological evaluation of integrated water use systems. It will also develop strategeis for integrated water utilisation of aquaculture and irrigation.
