Abstract

Remote-sensing and additional space-technologies should enable a continuous, reliable and rapid assessment of the ecological status of the world heritage Congolese sites and hence represents a unique source of information for all the different national and international bodies involved in the conservation and management of these protected areas. In this context, the BEGo project - "Build Environment for Gorillas"- was initiated by the European Space Agency in collaboration with UNESCO to explore the capabilities of Earth Observation Technology in a specific case: The protection of the habitat of the Mountain Gorilla. Some 600 gorillas nest in the area of interest and should remain healthy provided they are protected. *The project is funded by the European Space Agency under the framework of the Data User Programme.
