Knowledge of natural long-term rainfall variability in the subhumid and semi-arid regions of Africa is required to predict the frequency and intensity of future periods of prolonged drought, and permit landscape management practices to be adjusted to the reality of variable water resources. This project aims to explore a large number of crater lakes in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania and use their sedimentary archives of environmental change to reconstruct 2000 years of Africa's climate history.
