The removal of nitrogen during (waste)water treatment is an essential aspect for reducing high N loads in the environment. This research deals with the study of alternative N removal processes via short circuited nitrification - denitrification pathways. Aspects of environmental technology, microbiology and 15N tracer studies are combined to explain N removal efficiencies and mechanisms.
