The variability of metal binding properties of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and suspended solids (SS) will be related to physical chemical characteristics of natural water and natural DOC and SS. Based on these relations, metaltoxicity in natural waters can accurately be predicted and risk assessment and waterquality criteria setting can be done in a fundamental and ecologically relevant manner.
