Glossary

  • Academic title: The academic title signifies an official position or an academic qualification. The academic titles considered are: Civil Engineer (Ir.), Doctor (Dr.), Professor (Prof.), Professor Emeritus (Prof. Em).
  • BioBel contact: Responsible of the orgunit/project (by default), or person designated by the responsible of the orgunit/project, who is in charge of the management of the orgunit/project page content in BioBel.
  • Biodiversity: "Biodiversity is the variety of life in all its forms, levels and combinations, encompassing genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity" (FAO). We have intentionally excluded GMOs from this definition.
  • Biodiversity research: Any research activity with a specific objective aimed at improving the knowledge of the components and functioning of biodiversity in the context of nature conservation and sustainable development.
  • Co-leader: term used when the legal responsibility of the orgunit/project is attributed to more than one person
  • Cooperation status: classification defining the status of the countries collaborating on the project
  • Headcount: total number of working staff in the orgunit
  • High priority country: developing countries with which collaboration is considered as a high priority for biodiversity research in Europe:

    • Asia (Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam)
    • South America (Argentina, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Caribbean Island, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Venezuela, Peru)
    • Africa (Algeria, Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central Africa Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo Brazzaville, Côte d’Ivoire, DC Congo, Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, Tanzania, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe)
  • Integration levels: classification indicating which level of biodiversity (genetic, specific or ecosystemic) is targeted by the study
  • Leader: legal responsible of the orgunit/project recognized by the authority of the institution/project funding agency
  • Member: person who is officially part of an orgunit or person actively taking part in the accomplishment of a project (this person being paid on the project budget or not)
  • Orgunit: Organizational entity, which can be assigned on different hierarchical level, from an institution to a research unit or laboratory.
  • Orgunit staff: Group of persons with a status ranging from that of PhD student to that of Professor (including Professor Emeritus) that are officially member of a given orgunit. By default, technicians and masters’ student have have not been included in orgunit staff but can be added by the user if relevant.
  • Person: Person, assigned to at least one orgunit, who is working in or responsible for biodiversity research.
  • Project: Any activity, performed in at least one orgunit, with a specific objective related to biodiversity. Three types of projects are recognized:
    • Collection: activity consisting in gathering and storing (parts of) organisms in the purpose of studying or illustrating biodiversity
    • Research theme: research activity with a specific objective related to biodiversity.
    • Research project: research activity with a specific objective related to biodiversity, resulting from a successful application and characterized by a title, a start/end date, a staff, a funding source and a budget.
  • Publications: published outcome of a project.
  • Related unit: orgunit that is linked to another orgunit through history or privileged collaboration
  • Research disciplines: The ASRC classification, defined according to OECD standards, has been selected to classify the projects according to the scientific disciplines they depend on
  • Research orientations: The 5 former core projects of DIVERSITAS have been chosen to classify projects according to the aspect of biodiversity research they focus on, ranging from monitoring to conservation actions
  • Research purposes: CBD articles 6 to 19 have been chosen as classification system to characterize the social purpose of the biodiversity research
  • Subunit: orgunit that is under the responsibility of a “parent” orgunit
  • Turnover: total annual working budget of the orgunit
