Biodiversity: "Biodiversity is the variety of life in all its forms, levels and combinations, encompassing genetic diversity, species diversity and ecosystem diversity" (FAO). We have intentionally excluded GMOs from this definition.
Biodiversity research: Any research activity with a specific objective aimed at improving the knowledge of the components and functioning of biodiversity in the context of nature conservation and sustainable development.
Co-leader: term used when the legal responsibility of the orgunit/project is attributed to more than one person
Cooperation status: classification defining the status of the countries collaborating on the project
Headcount: total number of working staff in the orgunit
High priority country: developing countries with which collaboration is considered as a high priority for biodiversity research in Europe:
Asia (Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam)

Research disciplines: The ASRC classification, defined according to OECD standards, has been selected to classify the projects according to the scientific disciplines they depend on
Research orientations: The 5 former core projects of DIVERSITAS have been chosen to classify projects according to the aspect of biodiversity research they focus on, ranging from monitoring to conservation actions
Research purposes: CBD articles 6 to 19 have been chosen as classification system to characterize the social purpose of the biodiversity research
