BioBel is a reference database developed by the Belgian Biodiversity Platform (an initiative of the Belgian Science Policy) that provides a unique and centralized access to the expertise and resources available in Belgium in the field of biodiversity.
The database query tools allow users to freely retrieve accurate and up-to-date information on:

projects and collections
A secured login system allows the research community to directly maintain and update his/her own data in BioBel.

The initial content of BioBel was based on existing sources of information:
institution’s websites
BIODIV, a former inventory of the resources concerning biodiversity available in Belgium
INVENT, an inventory of the scientific potential in the Belgian public institutions developed by the Belgian Science Policy that gathers information from:
IWETO (Inventaris van het Wetenschappelijk en Technologisch Onderzoek in Vlaanderen
FEDRA, a database of research actions funded by the Belgian Science Policy
In order to guarantee BioBel holds the most accurate and updated information, a self-managing system has been set up that allows the researchers to directly maintain and update ( ) their own data online through a secured login system.
